Green Lantern #56
Geoff Johns – writer Doug Mahnke – artist
This issue continues the New Guardians storyline of Green Lantern ( Hal Jordan), Star Sapphire (Carol Ferris) and Sinestro locating the emotional entities that are residing on Earth. We first come across Hector Hammond, how is being handled by his keepers. During their harassment, Hector hears a voice offering to help him. He does not know who it is, but I don’t think he really cares who it is if they can help him get out and get what he wants. Shift to Hal investigating some break ins that turn out to be Larfleeze (Agent Orange) , just hanging out on Earth, collecting things as he puts it. Hal explains him that he cannot be stealing things from the people of Earth. Larfleeze then explains that he won’t have to now that he has heard about a certain gift giver up north. He will be in for a shock, just like all the little heartbroken kids in the world.
Hal needs to speak to Larfleeze about his entity, trapped in his lantern. He warns him that someone is looking for the entities. Larfleeze says his entity, which goes by the name of Ophidian the Tempter has been asking about Hal also. But it turns out Hal is not the only one there to talk to Larfleeze about his “mascot”, Hector Hammond has showed up to claim the lantern. Hector reveals that the miniature mysterious hooded figure with a rem
Let’s switch gears a bit and change the “emotion” to something a little more hopeful. We see Saint Walker of the Blue Lantern corps speaking with Renee Montoya regarding laying the original Question back to rest after the events of Blackest Night. He explains to Renee that sometimes hiding behind a mask is more damaging then the events you are hiding from and that you should just let it.
We come back to Larfleeze battling Hector Hammond for the lantern, desperately trying to get the entity out of the lantern. And when he cannot, he takes the entire lantern. After doing so, Hector Hammond gains sight of the remaining entities and their locations. He then learns that the avarice entity was not trapped in the lantern, but trapped by Larfleeze, and it was not an easy task. And not that Ophidian is free, he wants revenge!
Doug Mahnkes art is top notch this issue, love the details in Larfleezes constructs and the pity you feel by looking at Hector Hammond and how sad and pathetic he is. Geoff Johns delivers great interaction between Hal and Larfleeze, who is always fun to read about. Even though this is the middle of a story arc, this is a great read. It is always a good time to see what kind of creative constructs Johns comes up with and Mahnke interprets and brings to life!
